Question:

I am suffering from a continual hamstring problem in the right leg only. I stretch it heaps every day, but as soon as I start running again it flairs up and causes considerable pain. I appear to have "short" hamstrings as I can’t bend over and place my palms on the ground (why would I want to anyway…) Any suggestions as to how I can cure this problem, or is it just old age…

I have this same problem and have determined that it is caused by my right hip. Check to see if you can lift your right knee up (hugging chest) as far as your left. Mine right hip problem prevents proper full motion of the leg, and my hamstring suffers greatly as a result. I do a weird thing to help it – I stand on stairs standing on my left leg with right leg hanging off edge toward lower stairs, and then ‘throw’ my right leg down in a swinging motion really hard. This seems to release the stuck joint somewhat for me (not recommended by doctor or anything, just my own way of coping with the problem – your sacrum could be tilted off of proper alignment, so maybe try a chiropractor). The sports med. doctor said I may need a hip replacement later in life (I’m only 25 now). By the way, I am also very inflexible, and no amount of stretching, even yoga classes, seems to help. You should consider that it can be also sciatica, which often is misinterpreted as a hamstring problem. I have this also from time to time and it bothers me now since 2 months.
