Why did I feel sleepy after a workout

Categories: Power Yoga

Question:

I use Erich Shiffman’s video with Ali McGraw ‘Yoga mind and body’  - quite ’soft’ but based on the same sequence as power yoga. Sandra – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – — read and post daily, it works! rosie http://www.geocities.com/readandpost/ROSIE.html Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused. I do not know the cause or a fix, but I can sympathise.  I’ve been doing yoga regularly for about a year and I always feel very sleepy after a slow yoga session.  I think it is because I get so relaxed.  When I do power yoga on the other hand…..  :-) –zan :) I am a new yoga learner (about 3 months) a normal healthy person albeit slightly overweight.  After a workout this morning, I felt  sleepy and tired instead of refreshed or alert which I am supposed to be.  My savasana and breathing had been uncomfortable when I finished my workout. My head felt heavy and dense and my breathing – tired, during savasana.  Could anyone share with me your similar experiences and what could possibly been your cause. Much thanks. Cyndy

Response:

There’s a book out called Power Yoga, too. (Sorry, just butting in.) SilkEyed

On time when I was practicing I felt very very sleepy immediately after my practise.  I went for a walk around the neighbourhood and through a local wooded area. It is hard to describe the state of mind but I was kind of off in my own little world, dozy and dazing.   Very very relaxed. Then as I started to "wake up" my awareness came back up. I felt elated.  And (if I remember correctly) very bright and awake. I also felt a tremendous sense of connection with the world and all around me.  And joy.  Happy just to be alive. This site www.m1mbres.com/holp/holpath/cartog.htm discusses a mapping of the "Ecstatic and Meditative States". At one end of the scale is the meditative states, which is more and more "relaxed" but less and less aware of what is going on around you.  This site places samadhi and the furthest end of the meditative scale. At the other end of the scale are the ecstatic states: elated, euphoric, aroused, very alert and awake. . The paper also indicates that with practise you can jump from one end of the scale to the other.   That is, if you can get yourself very very relaxed (in samadhi) then you can jump over to "mystical rapture". So… I would say that you felt sleepy because you were doing a very very good job of relaxing and you just had to stay with that feeling until your energy rises and you would feel still relaxed but alert and elated!
