Tendonitis in Hips – need help
Question:
I have been practising Iyengar yoga regularly for around 4 years and am having big problems with my hip joints. I have been diagnosed with tendonitis in both hips. After any class or home practice (I do both)which has contained standing poses, such as Trikonasana, Parsvakonasana or variations, I find I have pain in both joints for days afterwards. My teacher recommends to do these poses more often, but I find I am unable to sustain practice in pain!
hmm tenonitis just mean your tendons are inflamed. i wonder, how was this diagnosis made. of course it might be an acurate dignosis. what tendons exactly? there are lots of tendons in the are. the hip joint itself is a ball and socket type joint. tendons attach muscles to bones. ligaments on the other hand attach bone to bone. i am not questioning the diagnosis, but it does certainly seem quite vague. there are so many factors to consider. how old are you? what has been your trauma and excercise history. it could be osteoartritis from wear and tear, it could be rheumatoid arthritis or one of the many rheumatoid variants. might be lots of studd. i tell my students that if they feel pain, to back off the posture a bit until the pain goes away. be gentle with yourself. pain is your body’s way of protecting itself against injury. often pain is the result of muscle guarding. ask your doctor to be more specific in his or her diagnosis. if he or she wont or can’t , go to one who will. if they tell you precisely what tendons are inflamed, then you could get a better idea of how your yoga pracdtice is interacting with this problem… hope this helps cheers…

Are you doing anything else–running or another sport? Just asking because I had chronic tendonitis of one hip from running. I had to completely stop running for a while and do a lot of stretching to make it go away. If it’s from yoga, it seems to me that if you’re in a lot of pain now, you might want to back off for a while and give it time to heal, then slowly start stretching it again. You might want to see an osteopath or a yoga therapist, and check to make sure your alignment in those poses is ok and that you’re not hyperextending. Good luck.
