Question:

Thank you both for your advice. Adara

Response:

Hatha Yoga is, of course, good for increasing flexibility, but of course all of yoga is much more. These are the spiritual disciplines of Sanatan Dharma/Hinduism.

Response:

Forgive me if this has been discussed recently, but . . . I am a beginning practitioner of the martial arts (namely kickboxing and submission grappling).  I am looking for ways to increase flexibility and strength, and was told yoga postures are a good method for obtaining the results I desire.

Dear adara, definetely it is. My question is this–should I purchase a book or video for instruction? Or is there a site ya’ll could recommend that the directions for the postures are understandable for the newcomer?  I have a partner to spot me, but he is no more knowledgeable about yoga than I.

How do you learn your kickboxing and submission grappling? Through a video or book? For a beginner it is very important to have a Yoga teacher – because there is so much you can do wrong, especially in the beginning, what is a very important phase of the Yoga learning process because here the base / the fundament is set you build your Yoga experience on. And if this is not a good fundament what at least negative could happen that you loose interest in Yoga because you do not understand – the worst is that you could harm yourself through doing exercises wrong. You may know and experience this through your martial art practice. I recomend to search for a good teacher you feel comfortable with and do additionaly Yoga at home with the support of a book or video your teacher does recomend you. You can also visit the alt.yoga FAQ homepage in order to search for a teacher online and find good books and videos. I also can recomend the Videos by Nirvair Singh Khalsa http://www.kundaliniyoga.net/ – he also made a Video called "Warriors Yoga" (or something simillar like that …) – it’s a very dynamic style, you may like it. Adara,         I really believe that any way to start yoga can be fine. However I started to practice when books were almost the only way, now that there are classes available widely, I recomend that you try one.         There are low cost classes available through colleges, adult education, and even beginers classes at lower cost through some yoga studios. The three dimensional quality and the teachers ability to help you adapt the poses to your current needs make a class the way to start. Enjoy your discovery of yoga practice. peace, sandra
